How often to clean the litter box is one of those questions almost nobody nails at first. Clean too little and the cat protests by going somewhere else. The short answer has two parts: scoop every day, and change everything weekly.
The routine that works
- Every day: scoop out poop and urine clumps. Twice a day is even better, especially with more than one cat.
- Every week: dump all the litter, wash the box with water and a little mild soap, dry it, and add fresh litter.
- Now and then: replace the box itself. Scratched plastic holds smell no matter how well you wash it. Once a year is usually enough.
It depends on how many cats
The more cats sharing one box, the faster it saturates. With one cat, the routine above handles it. With two or three, you will scoop more often and maybe change the litter twice a week. The golden rule stands: one more box than the number of cats.
Signs you are cleaning too little
Your cat tells you before you smell it. If it starts going just outside the box, digs forever before using it, or perches on the rim to avoid touching the litter, the box is dirty by cat standards. Cats hold a much higher cleanliness bar than we do.
The shortcut: an automatic box
An automatic litter box does the daily part for you. It sifts after each use and drops the waste into a sealed compartment, so day to day you just empty that compartment now and then. It does not replace the weekly litter change, but it takes the annoying daily chore off your plate. Good for anyone short on time or with several cats.
FAQ
Can I just top off the litter instead of changing it all?
Not a good idea. Topping off hides the problem, but the bottom stays dirty. The weekly change is what keeps the smell down. More on that in how to get rid of litter smell.
Clumping or silica litter?
Clumping makes daily scooping easier. Silica lasts longer between changes, but some cats dislike the texture. Test and see what yours prefers.
