Before you get mad, know this: cats do not do it out of spite. It is almost always a message that something is wrong. Your job is to figure out what.

First, rule out a health problem

If the change was sudden, especially if the cat pees only a little, strains, or cries while urinating, see the vet before anything else. Urinary infections and crystals are common and painful, and the cat links the pain to the box, so it starts avoiding it. That is an emergency, not stubbornness.

Then look at the box through your cat’s eyes

Is it dirty? Cats refuse a dirty box. Go back to scooping every day.

Too small or too enclosed? Many cats hate a cramped or covered box. Try a bigger, open one.

Too few boxes? The rule is one more than the number of cats, spread around the house.

Wrong spot? Next to a noisy washer or the food bowl, cats avoid it. Pick a quiet corner.

Changed the litter? A new texture or scent can drive them off. Go back to what they liked.

What about stress?

A move, a new pet, construction, houseguests. Stress changes a cat’s behavior, and the box is one of the first things to go. In those cases, keep the routine steady and give hiding spots and height so the cat feels safe.

How to clean the pee so it does not repeat

Cats return to a spot that already smells like them. Clean it with an enzyme cleaner, which breaks the smell down for good, not bleach, which reminds them of ammonia and actually draws them back. While you sort it out, block the spot or put a box there for a few days.

Where an automatic box helps

If the cause is a dirty box and you cannot keep up with scooping, an automatic box stays clean after every use, which removes that trigger. It will not fix a health or stress problem, but it fixes the hygiene one.
