A chubby cat is not a happy cat. It is a cat with a higher shot at diabetes and joint problems. The right amount comes down to three things: weight, age, and whether the food is wet or dry. Here are the numbers and how to adjust in real life.

The basic math by weight

As a starting point, a healthy adult cat needs roughly 20 to 25 calories per pound of body weight per day. A 9 lb cat lands around 200 calories a day. Check your food bag: it lists calories per cup or per 100g, and you work the portion out from there.

For most premium dry foods, that comes out to something like a third to a half cup a day for that 9 lb cat. It looks like a small amount, and it is. The bowl almost always ends up fuller than it should be.

It changes with age and situation

Kitten: needs a lot more energy per pound because it is growing. Follow the kitten food chart and feed more often.

Adult: the math above works well.

Senior or neutered: energy needs drop. Neutered cats gain weight easily, so they usually need a bit less.

Overweight cat: do not slash everything at once. Cut back slowly, ideally with your vet’s guidance.

Wet, dry, or both?

Wet food carries far more water, which helps hydration a lot. Dry is more convenient and stretches further. Plenty of owners split the difference: dry during the day and one pouch at night. If you want the water side of this, see our hydration guide. The full comparison is in wet vs dry cat food.

How to tell the portion is right

Forget the bowl for a second and look at the cat. You should be able to feel the ribs with a light touch, without seeing them. From above, there is a slight waist behind the ribs. A hanging belly and no waist means too much food.

FAQ

Can I leave food out all day?

You can, but many cats eat out of boredom and gain weight. A measured portion usually controls weight better.

How many times a day should I feed?

Two or three meals works well for adults. Cats prefer several small portions over one big one.

My cat eats fast and throws up. Is it the amount?

Not always. Often it is the speed, not the volume. See how to fix it in cat eats too fast.

Almost every cat owner gets the portion wrong, and it is almost always too much.
